'The Silver Donkey is a gorgeous jewel of a book ... It will be a children's classic.'
The Age

'[Play] it to your children for its wonderfully controlled prose and beautifully composed story.'
The Sydney Morning Herald

Another enchanting novel from the author of The Ghost's Child.

One bright spring morning in the woods of France, a soldier, blinded by the war, is found by a little girl named Coco, and her older sister Marcelle. In return for their kindness, the soldier tells the sisters marvellous tales, each story connected to the keepsake he carries in his pocket: a perfect, tiny silver donkey. As the days pass and they struggle in secret to help the soldier reach home, Coco and Marcelle learn the truth behind the silver donkey, and what the precious object means: honesty, loyalty, and courage.

'Set in World War One, this story tells of the discovery by two young French girls of an English soldier in the woods near their home. Blinded by war, exhausted and hungry, the soldier is trying to make his way home. The girls are determined to help him and in return, the soldier tells them four stories, all relating to the silver donkey he carries in his pocket. The narration, which is clear and expressive, effectively creates the atmosphere of the story.'
Primary Focus Fiction

'Some books seem to have always existed. The Silver Donkey is one of them. It's a timeless piece of storytelling, and reading it is like rediscovering a long-lost classic.'
