Elizabeth Wein

Elizabeth Wein was born in New York, and grew up in England, Jamaica and Pennsylvania. It is her love of flying that partly inspired the idea for Code Name Verity. Born in New York City in 1964, Elizabeth moved to England when she was three, and Jamaica when she was six. Elizabeth loved Jamaica and as a child was fluent in Jamaican patois; but in 1973 her parents separated, and Elizabeth and her siblings ended up back in the US living with their mother Carol Flocken in Harrisburg, PA. When Carol died in a car accident in 1978, Carol's parents took the children in and raised them. Elizabeth went to Yale University, spent a work-study year back in England, and then spent seven years getting a PhD in Folklore at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, where she held a Javits Fellowship. In 1995 Elizabeth moved to England with new husband Tim, and then to Scotland in 2000.

Award winning author

Featuring beloved characters from Code Name Verity and The Pearl Thief, as well as a remarkable new voice, this brilliant, breathlessly plotted novel by award-winning author Elizabeth Wein is a must-listen.

Facing a seemingly endless war, 15-year-old Louisa Adair wants to fight back, make a difference, do something – anything to escape the Blitz and the ghosts of her parents, who were killed by enemy actions. But when she accepts a position caring for an elderly German woman in the small village of Windyedge, Scotland, it hardly seems like a meaningful contribution. Still, the war feels closer than ever in Windyedge, where Ellen McEwen, a volunteer driver at the local Royal Air Force base and Jamie Beaufort-Stuart, a flight leader for the 648 Squadron, are facing a barrage of unbreakable code and enemy attacks they can’t anticipate. Their paths converge when a German pilot lands in Windyedge under mysterious circumstances and plants a key that leads Louisa to an unparalleled discovery: an Enigma machine that translates German code. Louisa, Ellen and Jamie must work together to unravel a puzzle that could turn the tide of the war … but doing so will put them directly in the crosshairs of the enemy.

'Wein truly demonstrates her masterful hand.'
